Grief Support & The HUG Centre

Colchester East Hants Hospice Society is extremely proud and excited to be home to The HUG Centre; a space of hope and understanding for the grieving.

The philosophy of The HUG Centre is to offer a space to help those that are struggling with their grief journey. The space that we want to create isn’t always at our office but rather in the communities that we serve. It is about creating relationships and developing collaborative partnerships with groups and organizations in the community. We understand the need for trust and transparency and our organization is dedicated to continue to find ways to bring our grief programs and services.

We look forward to welcoming you and are grateful that you are here.

Individual Grief Support

Our team offers one on one support to individuals and families when a person is terminally ill or after a person dies. We have social work staff for both adult grief, as well as grief support for children and youth. This may include support for the individual who is dying, or for those connected to the individual. Services are offered in our office, in community and school settings where we assist individuals in making sense of their world after the death of a person in their lives or when death is near. Support includes learning about our feelings around a death, dying, grieving, and anything associated with these emotions.

Grief Support

We offer Family-Centred and Peer-Led Group Facilitation Models, and our program is based on The Dougy Centre Model, an internationally recognized peer grief support program for children, teens, young adults, and their families.

We host 8 week Peer Grief Support Groups several times during the year. We also offer groups and workshops for specific needs (i.e.pet loss, loss of a child, MAiD), as well as topics like Staying Healthy in Grief and other wellness offerings, throughout the community.

Our Social Drop-In Sessions occur on the third Wednesday of each month from 1pm until 3pm at the Hospice office. This is an opportunity for anyone grieving the death of someone important in their life to come together in an informal setting.

We also offer Walk & Talk sessions at the East Hants Sportsplex on the third Wednesday of the month at 9am. It’s an opportunity to talk with Hospice staff about anything grief-related.

Summer Camps for Children & Youth and Family Retreats are an opportunity for kids and their families to learn from each other, be creative, express themselves and make new friends.
