A message from Jason’s mother, Doris Fahey:
My mother, Renate Bampton, has always been a hands on kind of woman, and never afraid to try something new. Mom was just learning how to make quilts during the time our family had to face the painful reality that Jason’s condition was now palliative. Quilt making is definitely a gift and this gift was sewn with much love. It was a piece of her heart. She chose a more modern style, both in design and fabric, to appeal to a young man. It was very important to finish this quilt in time to be able to give it to Jason for Christmas so that he could really enjoy it. As the photos so easily reflect, Jason was very touched by this special gift from his grandmother. He knew all the work that went into making his present and it was received in the same love.
Now a little from me as to how the quilt found it’s way to our Hospice. There have been a lot of changes in our lives as a result of Jason’s passing. Our family created the Legacy Fund in memory of Jason as a way of giving back to our community. Without the support of Serena Lewis, a CEH Hospice social worker at the time – as well as the care Dr. Henderson and his team provided through palliative care, VON – we could have never managed. There have been many unexpected events, including Ralph’s illness, that have resulted in us selling and moving from our family home of 16 years. Downsizing also means letting things go. As I was unpacking I came across Jason’s quilt. I thought the quilt would make a great addition to our fundraising efforts toward his Legacy Fund. I do hope that all the love that was sewn into this quilt will now be a blessing to someone else.
A little part of Jason’s story and life will also continue on… and this quilt will be like wrapping yourself in a hug.
