For immediate release

Truro, NS – The Colchester East Hants Hospice (CEHH) is pleased to announce a free public talk with Pallium Canada’s, Bonnie Tompkins. Pallium Canada’s Compassionate Communities National Lead, Bonnie is currently working to mobilize compassionate communities across Canada. The Colchester East Hants Hospice and Pallium Canada are partnering to bring Pallium’s Compassionate Communities mobilization strategy and support tools to Nova Scotia. This free public lecture will take place on Wednesday, November 8th, 2017 at 7:00pm at First United Church, 711 Prince Street, Truro, Nova Scotia.

In addition to Wednesday’s talk, a Compassionate Communities Workshop will take place on the morning of Thursday, November 9th. The workshop will provide community stakeholders from across the province a unique opportunity to learn how to mobilize a Compassionate Community. In particular, the workshop, facilitated by the CEHH social work team and Bonnie Tompkins, will focus on the piloting of Pallium’s new Compassionate Communities startup kit.

About Compassionate Communities and Pallium Canada

Public health is what we, as a society, do collectively to assure the conditions for people to be “healthy”. Any issue affecting a society that has a prevalence, an impact on society, preventable suffering, effective interventions and equity issues, should be considered a public health issue. Given the universality of death, dying, loss and bereavement, palliative care is increasingly being seen around the world as a true public health issue. Much of the world has already mobilized around palliative care as a public health issue and a theory of practice to do so, has been articulated and embraced. This theory of practice that helps us mobilize on palliative care as a public health issue is known internationally as the Compassionate Cities or Compassionate Communities model.

Pallium Canada (www.pallium.ca) is a non-profit Pan-Canadian organization established in 2001 to develop palliative care-related educational programs. Pallium Canada is invested in helping Canada mobilize around Palliative Care and in particular, to understand, adapt and adopt Compassionate Communities initiatives. Through knowledge translation, education, project facilitation and leadership, Pallium Canada invites citizens, communities, care-providers, schools, businesses, educators and organizations to learn about Compassionate Communities and to “re-embrace” and then engage, in this vital social transformation.

About The Colchester East Hants Hospice

The Colchester East Hants Hospice Society provides comfort and care to families as they face serious illness, death and grief. Hospice volunteers and professionals work closely with the Palliative Care team, putting the patient at the centre and in control of his or her own life and care. By delivering psychological, social, spiritual and practical support, Hospice promotes quality of living and quality of dying.

A registered charity, Hospice relies on the support of a generous community to fund all programs and receives no direct government funding. Hospice operations are entirely funded by private donations, bequests, fundraisers, and community grants.
